The Society of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine [of Turkey] was founded in 1998 by pediatricians with a special interest in pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric intensive care medicine. As the two groups were relatively small initially, they joined up to form a single association to support each other.
The mission of the Society is the advancement of Pediatric Emergency and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine in the Republic of Turkey. Public advocacy, professional training and promotion of scientific research are main areas of activity.
During the 2000s, a time of rapid expansion for Pediatric Intensive Care and Pediatric Emergency services in Turkey, the Society played important roles aiding in the organization of services and establishment of structured training programs in both fields. It published reports and guidelines on the state of pediatric intensive care and pediatric emergency department services giving recommendations; conducted manpower research and made projections.
After a protracted advocacy effort lasting more than 10 years, the Society successfully lobbied for the establishment in 2012 of the fields of Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine as official subspecialties under Pediatrics.
Among the various activities of the Society scientific meetings have been a mainstay and were organized since 2000. In 2003, these meetings took the form of an annual national congress. In 2014, the Society hosted the WFPICCS congress in Istanbul.
Various routine training activities are conducted by the Society throughout Turkey, including life support courses, pediatric intensive care and pediatric emergency medicine courses, as well as American Heart Association authorized AHA BLS & PALS courses and American Academy of Pediatrics authorized APLS courses. Other activities include training in advanced airway management, point-of-care ultrasound, renal replacement therapies, mechanical ventilation among others. The Society’s bilingual Journal of Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine is published since 2013.
